98,000+ Indians Compete for Just 1,000 Australia Work and Holiday Visas in 2026
In 2024, over 98,000 young Indians applied for Australia’s Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462), even though only 1,000 slots were available for Indian nationals. Introduced under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), this visa allows young adults to explore, live, and work across Australia for up to one year.
A New Chapter in Australia-India Mobility
The Work and Holiday visa officially opened to Indian citizens on October 1, 2024, making India the 50th country to join Australia's Working Holiday Maker programme. The scheme was designed to foster cultural exchange and provide young travelers with the opportunity to experience life in Australia while taking up short-term jobs.
Massive Demand – Limited Opportunities
Between October and November 2024, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs received 139,633 valid registrations for the 2026 visa ballot. India accounted for a staggering 98,019 of those, showing the overwhelming interest from Indian youth.
Here’s the breakdown of registrations by country:
-
India: 98,019
-
China: 34,161
-
Vietnam: 7,453
-
Total: 139,633
Despite the high interest, only 988 Indian applicants were granted the visa under the initial round.
How the Ballot System Works
Unlike traditional visa categories, the Work and Holiday visa uses a randomized ballot system. Each applicant must pay a registration fee of AUD 25 (approx. ₹1,500) to enter the ballot via their ImmiAccount. Selected candidates then receive an official invitation to apply, with 28 days to complete the full application, which costs AUD 650.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, Indian applicants must:
-
Be between 18 and 30 years old
-
Hold a valid Indian passport and PAN card
-
Apply from outside Australia
-
Not have any dependents included in the application
